A nostalgic recipe for Biscochitos passed down from my Abuelita Romelia and my mom, which they made every Christmas. Using lard is a must for an authentic taste. The recipe features a blend of aniseed, sugar, and lemon zest, combined with flour and spices, creating a delightful holiday cookie.

What you need

3 tbsp brown sugar

½ cup sugar

1 lemon zest

3 cup flour

1 ½ tsp baking powder

¾ tsp salt

3 tbsp granulated sugar

1 cup lard

1 tsp cinnamon

1 egg

1 ½ tsp aniseed

4 tbsp sherry

Instructions

1: Toast aniseeds in a pan till brown and super aromatic.

2: Grind aniseeds together with 1/2 cup sugar and lemon zest. Set aside.

3: In a bowl, add lard, 1/2 cup sugar, and the sugar and aniseed mixture. Cream together using a hand mixer.

4: Add in the egg and Sherry until nice and fluffy.

5: Mix in the baking powder and salt to the wet ingredients till combined.

6: Gradually add in the flour until a dough is formed.

7: Scoop out 1 oz dough balls and roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture.

8: Place them on a lined cookie sheet about an inch apart as they won’t spread.

9: Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 10 minutes and enjoy.
